Editor's Letter

Lucia’s contributors and the artists in this issue stun and ground us with their collective—and relatively young—wisdom. These women weave light with dark, flowers with soil, and prose with song until their voices echo a collective message: This is our heroine’s journey.

Editor's Letter

When my first-born niece was learning to form words, “Auntie Laura” was a mouthful. She simply called me, “Auntie Baba,” and the name stayed even after her tiny tongue had long since mastered L’s and R’s.

What she could not have known is that being given the name Baba represented something to me that tingled in my feet and thudded through my heart.

Baba Yaga, the myths tell us, is the wildest of wild women this earth will ever know. Some might even say she is the Earth: older than anyone, powerful beyond measure, fickle, unforgiving, a keeper of promises and every piece of wisdom that we must learn if we are to become.

I carry my new name with good humor, quiet pride, and also a fair amount of fear—for I know I am but halfway on my journey.

Our third issue is all about that wild woman. She lives in the earth, the air, the forests, the oceans, the lands we keep, and she resides right here in our own beating hearts.

Lucia’s contributors and the artists in this issue stun and ground us with their collective—and relatively young—wisdom. These women weave light with dark, flowers with soil, and prose with song until their voices echo a collective message: This is our heroine’s journey. Not a trek through an outer landscape to find an elixir and return with the prize, no. Ours is the winding path inward where we discover our courage and find our voice. It is from knowing this wild feminine place that love will conquer and peace will come.

Welcome to Wild.

Love,
