Photography Award
The winner of Lucia’s photography award for her series of photographs is a transformational fiber artist, weaving together photography, sculpture, scarves, dish towels, and leather goods. She is also a delight.
“Photography frees me to capture the details that I notice. I know inherently they’re going to leak through in my artwork. I photographed a peony then wondered, should I paint it? I didn’t, but it became a dye color for a dress. Everything informs everything else. That’s why I work in so many mediums,” Cat Babbie shares.
“This series of pictures felt peaceful, quiet, restful, mindful. There is a stillness in them. I think they are almost more like a pause from the wild,” she reflects. “And in all of their stillness, the images themselves depict life. I mean, what could be more wild than flowers, lichen, and an orange cat?”
Cat studied studio art at James Madison University and lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband and three cats in a cozy, 100-year-old bungalow.
